The purpose of Bridging Out is to connect Middle and High school youth with local organizations through service projects. Local organizations can be of great importance in teaching Zeeland youth how to serve their community, so Bridging Out is partnering with them. At the same, the program offers adult volunteers the opportunity for mentoring relationships. Our goal is to involve “at-risk” youth from grades 6th through 12th who have already demonstrated leadership capabilities, and have a desire to serve the community. The design of the program is to encourage youth to think beyond themselves by improving the community in which they live.
On the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 2:45-5:00, the group engages in a service learning opportunity, going out into the community to learn to serve those in need. Students have engaged in a number of service opportunities in the past, ranging from doing yard work for shut ins to assisting other community organizations that aim to serve those in need. Students already enrolled in Bridge to Excellence are already expected to participate in Bridging out.
