The Skills for Life Program Purpose

Skills for Life offers outings for high school students where they have opportunities to get direct contact with employers in potential career paths. Students tour local places of employment and educational programs who introduce a variety of skills, jobs, and opportunities so that they can make more informed job and schooling decisions for the future.

What are the Perks of Taking Part in Skills for Life?

Students get first-hand exposure to a variety of workplaces, learning about day-to-day employment, compensation, career advancement, and other benefits.

Students gain knowledge of the steps that are required to work in specific fields, helping them to become more informed decision makers about their future schooling and job training.

Students and employers have direct conversations, receive feedback from one another, and build a network of new connections, which can lead to more mutually beneficial employment opportunities.

What Happens Each Program Day?

The Bridge picks students up at school at the start of the day, and are given a brief overview of the day’s tours.

Students travel to 2-3 workplaces, getting individualized tours and plenty of chances to ask questions and explore the types of jobs available at each employer.

Students fill out information packets that help answer questions regarding the workplace and are given a chance to debrief about what they learned on the driving time between tours and on the way back to school.

What is the Program’s Schedule?

Skills for Life typically begins in October each school year and continues until May. Sign up is on a per trip basis.

The program runs on one Friday morning per month, typically on scheduled school half days.

As is true for all Bridge Youth Center programming during the school year, the program only runs on days when school is in session.
